Very popular way of spending vacations is exchange houses. People from totally different countries and culture, are meeting on line and decide to live for couple of weeks in each other apartments. Usually, they don’t know destinate town at all, they don’t know the language, but sometimes colleagues of host are helping with adjustment. This way of holiday is mostly popular in Esperanto circles, then language barrier is not a problem. Two students of this language, Paweł from Szczecin and Salman from Istanbul switch their apartments. Let’s see what each one has to say about living for 2 weeks in exactly different culture.

Salman’s story

My name is Salman, I am 34 years old, and I live in Istanbul, Turkey. I was staying at Pawel’s house for 2 weeks, and it was my first visit to Poland. First, when I came, I was astonished about the temperature, it was really hot night in July, and I was prepare to wear sweater. I arrived at Gdansk’s airport and then I take a train to Szczecin. I was a little afraid about reaction on my skin color, I was hearing couple worrisome stories about racism of Polish inhabitants, but it was fine. Two friends of Pawel pick me up from main railway station , and they promised me to take care of me in time of my stay. They also known Esperanto, and very good English, so conversations were easy. Second day, at the morning, I ate some polish breakfast, prepared for my by Pawel’s flatmate. It was delicious but very greasy – huge portionof scrambled eggs with ham and plenty of onion, dressed with white bread and butter. After, I went to old district to see couple of heritages (look). I like European architecture, it so different then Arabic one. Szczecin has many of building constructed in nineteenth century, couple Middle-Aged and Gothic cathedrals and lovely parks and squares. The most I liked post office structure, it looks similar as one from Harry Potter film. Rest of my vacations I spend driving along seaside, tasting local food, meeting new, mostly friendly citizens. I really enjoy my stay in Poland.

Pawel’s story

Hi, my name is Pawel, I’m from Szczecin, I am thirty years old. I was visiting for two weeks in Istanbul, in apartment of my colleague, which I met at Esperanto convention. I was very thrilled about my tour, I heard that Turkey is very fascinating country. I was living in huge, snugflat in the middle of old district. I was observing morning crowd, while having brunch at balcony. I was charmed by Istanbul. It is really adorable place, with interesting history, and very friendly people (find out something more). First week I spend discovering the city, not just old town with heritages, and monumental Muslim architecture, but also city center with biggest skyscrapers I have ever seen.

I spend two days at one of local beaches, and it was to much people, but the temperature was delightful. Next week I was driving with my rucksack trough some small villages, learning culture, customs and language of citizens. It was really significant experience for me.

Switching houses during vacations is a very good deal, but just for courages ones. Some travelers may be afraid of unknown person staying in their flat, but if you find your host on special website, you are protected. So choose your host wisely, and have fun during your holidays.
